The organiser: ARTS-ED
Community-based Arts and Culture Education Programme

We are a non-profit arts education organization based in Penang. We provide innovative non-formal arts and heritage education for young people through collaboration with local and regional arts educators, artists and communities.

Formed in 2000 in the inner city of George Town, and expanded to Balik Pulau in 2005, the program is always located in the ‘real’ environment (as opposed to a classroom), to widen the scope and relevance of  information, resources and materials which children can work with.

Our vision is to help sustain local culture and diversity through creative hands-on approaches to education that emphasise the relationship between arts, culture and life.
Our on-going goals are to help young people map, document and understand their local history and culture. We do this by enabling the flow of knowledge and skills between young people, arts educators, artists and craftsmen.

For our work groups, we provide training for facilitation, programming and project coordination. We also expose youth, artists and educators with leadership potential to moves towards facilitation and coordination of projects.

We produce a range of artistic and academic outputs for outreach to the local community.

We also act as consultants for community projects that involve enhancing local culture.
